The most action-packed, fun-filled summer that London can remember is drawing to a close and this weekend is your last chance to get involved.  Soak up some riverside sun at the Thames Festival, have a look at Paralympic running blades at the Museum of Childhood, go to a Closing Ceremony and more…

Thames Festival 2012, various locations along the Thames, 8 and 9 September 2012

Get down to the Thames this weekend to celebrate the 2012 Thames Festival.  A whole host of events are set to take place between Westminster and Tower Bridges.  The festival incorporates live music, dance, art installations, carnival, river races, street food and street arts.  The Festival has always drawn the crowds in the past but expect this year’s event to be even bigger and better, with added Olympic/Paralympic elements.  The festival culminates with a fireworks display on Sunday evening.  More details and event listings here.

Beautiful Games, V&A Museum of Childhood, closes Sunday 9 September 2012

Want to see the type of running blade used by Paralympics star sprinter Oscar Pistorius? See this and other cutting edge sporting equipment and memorabilia (and test your nerve with a virtual skeleton bobsleigh ride) at the Museum of Childhood’s Beautiful Games exhibition which closes this weekend.  Free.  More details here.

Paralympic marathon, Central London, Sunday 9 September 2012

The Paralympic marathon takes place on the streets of Central London on Sunday morning.  This is your last chance to watch some free Paralympic action – the race starts and ends on The Mall (tickets required for The Mall, the rest of the route is free).  Free.  More details here.

Closing Ceremony, Geffrye Museum, Hoxton, 10am to 5pm, Saturday 8 September 2012

Head along to the Geffrye Museum in Hoxton on Saturday where the Museum’s Youth Advisory Panel is hosting a Closing Ceremony to celebrate the end of its Stories of the World: London programme. Decorate tiles, watch and join in with the Bhangra Dancers, hear stories of treasures from the deep, participate in the garden octathlon games, go behind the scenes at the Museum, attend a film screening and more.  Activities for the under 5s include quizzical quizzes, a Feely Box full of mystery objects and activity back packs.  Free.  More details here.

London Wildlife Trust, Sydenham Hill Wood Open Day, 12pm to 4.30pm, Sunday 9 September 2012

Join London Wildlife Trust to kick off celebrations of Sydenham Hill Wood’s 30th birthday as a nature reserve.  There will be cakes, a tombola, face painting and a number of walks on the day. There will also be a Nature Adventure for kids.  Free.  More details here.
