Freightliners Farm

A recent trip to Islington for lunch with some friends afforded the perfect opportunity for a visit to Freightliners Farm.  As it happens, I used to live about 200 metres from this farm many, many years ago, but back then my leisure-time priorities were different and I never made it through the gate.  Now, with the little man in tow, it just didn’t seem fair to pass by without having a look.

Freightliners Farm - Freightliner

Freightliners Farm takes its name from the railway goods vans that housed the animals in the farm’s original location on wasteland behind King’s Cross station.  Nearly forty years later, the farm is based in Islington, between Highbury & Islington and Caledonian Road stations, but a railway freight carriage still takes pride of place at the centre of the farmyard.

Freightliners Farm - Cow

We arrived late in the day and the animals had already been brought in from the paddock to be fed, watered and put to bed in their stables.  We wandered through the barn to get a closer peek at the cows, pigs, goats and sheep.  The farm also has a large chicken population, including some exotic-looking breeds, accommodated in hen houses which line the farm’s paths.  To the front of the farmyard, near the eco Strawbale Café, there’s an animal village where the farm’s smallest inhabitants, including some very friendly rabbits, reside in painted houses.  A vegetable garden and classroom (for the many community education schemes organised by Freightliner’s Farm) complete the site.  It may be compact and bijou, but our family does love a trip to a farm, and this one fitted the bill perfectly for an unexpected Saturday afternoon detour.

Interest rating

One of the smaller city farms we’ve visited, but definitely worth a look if you live nearby or are passing through the area like we were.

Free – but donations gratefully received.  Freightliners Farm is under pressure having lost much of its funding in recent years.

Strawbale Cafe at Freightliners Farm

The Strawbale Café serves hot and cold drinks, vegetarian meals and snacks.  It is open Thursday to Sunday.  The Café offers a children’s menu.  Proceeds from the Café, which is partly run by volunteers and provides work experience for young people, go towards the upkeep of the farm.

Freightliners Farm is pushchair accessible.

Opening hours

Freightliners Farm is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm (4.45pm in Spring/Summer).  Closed on Mondays apart from Bank Holidays.
