What’s on at the weekend? – 8, 9 March 2014

This weekend the Vikings are coming, it’s the last chance for War Games, and there’s a whole market of handmade items to be had…

Vikings: life and legend, British Museum, until 22 June 2014

The first major exhibition on Vikings at the British Museum for over 30 years opens this week. The exhibition features many new archaeological discoveries and objects never seen before in the UK alongside important Viking Age artefacts from the British Museum’s own collection and elsewhere in Britain and Ireland. Tickets cost £16.50 (adult), children under 16 free. More details here.

War Games, V&A Museum of Childhood, until Sunday 9 March 2014

It’s the last chance to catch the Museum of Childhood’s War Games exhibition this weekend. Exploring the relationship between conflict and children’s play, the exhibition provides an insight into the ways toys have been influenced by warfare from 1800 to the present day. Exhibits include toys and games such as Risk, GI Joe and classic toy soldiers, as well as photographs and archive documents revealing the links between play and wider attitudes towards warfare, propaganda and espionage. Free. More details here.

Made Locally with Love, Spitalfields Market, 11am to 5pm, Saturday 8 March 2014

Head to Spitalfields this weekend to browse an array of unique, contemporary handmade items, from affordable art to foodie treats and handcrafted gifts. In a bid to keep crafts alive you can also try your hand at crochet, stamp making and more. Free. More details here.
