What’s on at the weekend? – 30, 31 March 2013

It may feel like January, but it’s Easter this weekend and so a host of chocolate- and Spring-inspired activities beckon. Try a chocolate quest, a goat race, Roman archaeology and Easter holiday museum activities…

Easter Holiday Activities, Science Museum, until 12 April 2013

The Science Museum has a whole host of family workshops and events to keep you busy over the Easter holidays. Try the Up, Up and Away interactive storytelling for under 7s, or the Compute This gadget and programming workshop and Wireless Workshop for over 7s. Alternatively, over 5s can enjoy the Space in Your Face show.  All of the above are free, check website for details of dates and times. More details here.

Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, British Museum, until 29 September 2013

Pompeii and Herculaneum, two cities on the Bay of Naples in southern Italy, were buried by a catastrophic volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in just 24 hours in AD 79. This event ended the life of the cities but at the same time preserved them until rediscovery by archaeologists nearly 1700 years later. The excavation of these cities has given us an unparallelled insight into Roman life.  The British Museum’s new and much anticipated exhibition into these Roman cities is the first to be held in London for almost 40 years and brings together over 250 archaeological finds, many never before seen outside Italy. Admission costs £15 (adults), under 16s enter for free. More details here.

Chocolate Quest, Kew Gardens, until 14 April 2013

Visit Kew Gardens this Easter and take part in a Chocolate Quest adventure trail, with workshops and activities. Learn about Mayan cacao in the rainforest, how the Spanish brought cacao to Europe, visit a Georgian coffee house, discover Victorian chocolate bars and more. On Easter weekend there will also be an Easter egg hunt around the Gardens. Tickets cost £14.50 for adults, children under 16 enter for free. More details here.

Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race, Spitalfields City Farm, 31 March 2013

Now in its 5th year, the Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race is set to take place on exactly the same date, at exactly the same time, as what some event listings have already named ‘the other race’ – the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race. With all proceeds going to Spitalifields City Farm, crowds can expect to watch two goats, one named Oxford and one named Cambridge, tear around the cobbled track of Spitalfields City Farm. Gates open at 1pm with bands, booze, puns and other goat related nonsense all scheduled to happen before the big race at 4pm. Tickets cost £5 with all proceeds to the farm. More details here.

Easter activities, V&A Museum of Childhood, until 1 April 2013

Drop in to the Museum this Easter for stories, games and creative fun including an Easter Bunny Trail, Bunny Games, The Hare and the Tortoise and Egg-tastic Arts and Crafts. All activities are free, just drop in. Suitable for all ages. More details here.
