What’s on at the weekend? – 19, 20 January 2013

If the weather forecast for this weekend is anything to go by, most people will be heading down to their local park with a sledge rather than seeking out alternative entertainment.  Still, if you do feel more like keeping warm indoors than building snowmen outdoors, here’s what’s on…

Bike Show, Boat Show, Active Travel Show and Outdoors Show, Excel London, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 January 2013

Interested in the great outdoors? One ticket gets you admission to four shows at London’s Excel this weekend.  Perfect for cycling and sailing enthusiasts, intrepid travellers and outdoor adventurers, the shows offer expert and big name speakers, demonstrations, exhibitors and interactive activities.  Tickets cost £16 (adults), children under 16 are free.  More details here.

London Model Engineering Exhibition, Alexandra Palace, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 January 2013

Do you have a budding engineer in the family? If so, head to Alexandra Palace this weekend to see  over 1,400 models on show. There will be demonstrations of remote controlled helicopters, trucks and tanks, passenger rides behind the 5” gauge steam locomotives and the Imagineering Foundation will also be on hand to talk to fledgling engineers.  Tickets cost £10 (adults), £5.50 (children aged 5 to 14). More details here.

Seduced by Art: Photography Past and Present, National Gallery, until Sunday 20 January 2013

This weekend is your last chance to catch the National Gallery’s first major exhibition of photography.  The exhibition explores early photography from the mid-19th century and contemporary photographs, alongside historical painting.  It considers how photographers use fine art traditions, including Old Master painting, to explore and justify the possibilities of their art. Tickets cost £12 (adults) and £6 (children aged 12 to 18). More details here.

Imaginary View, Somerset House, until 9 February 2013

Check out a new, free exhibition opening this weekend at Somerset House.  Imaginary View: An Exhibition by Dan Tobin Smith and Rachel Thomas is an exhibition of photographs showcasing landscapes they crafted from polystyrene. Alongside the photographs, a number of the sculptures are on display, adding to the sense of intrigue, illusion and scale evident in the photographs. Free. More details here.
