What’s on at the weekend? – 14, 15 February 2015 (and half term)

There’s plenty of fun to be had around town this week. We’ve selected our highlights – from a children’s festival to book-swapping, food cravings to exploding plants…  

Plantastic, Horniman Museum, until 1 November 2015

The Horniman unveils its latest family-friendly exhibition this weekend. Plantastic brings the miniature world of plants to life. There are super seed pods and exploding cucumbers, sun-seeking flowers and a huge crawl-through root system alongside interactive games and exhibits. Tickets cost £6.50 (adult), £3.50 (child aged 3 to 16). Free for Horniman members. More details here

Imagine Children’s Festival, Southbank Centre, until 22 February 2015

The annual Imagine Children’s Festival is back to liven up February half term. Explore the Southbank Centre venues and discover an Alice-themed Wonderland of surprises incorporating interactive installations, immersive theatre, live music, workshops, famous authors and illustrators and more. World Food Explorer and The Snail and the Whale, Museum of London, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February 2015

Find out where in the world your food is from and hear Julia Donaldson’s tale of The Snail and the Whale at the Museum of London’s Art and Storytelling workshops this weekend. Free. More details here

Cravings: Can your food control you?, Science Museum

The Science Museum has a new, interactive exhibition exploring what drives your desires for the foods you love. Through personal stories, fascinating objects and cutting-edge science and technology, explore how food affects your body, brain and eating habits. Free. More details here

London Children’s Book Swap, various locations, Saturday 14 February 2015

There are events happening all over town on Saturday as part of this year’s London Children’s Book Swap – take your story books along and swap them for new ones. Check out what’s on at Discover Children’s Story Centre, Barbican Library, Polka Theatre, Arts Depot, Geffrye Museum and all manner of other venues, see more details here

Family Day: Abstract Art, Whitechapel Gallery, 12pm to 4pm, Saturday 14 February 2015

Whitechapel Gallery is offering the chance to get inspired by abstract art with your family this weekend. Create costumes, hats and jewellery to become a walking work of art and help make a giant building with artist Laura X Carlé. Free. Booking recommended but drop-in welcome. More details here

Museum of London: Explore your street, hear the story of Amy Johnson, make a travel journal or become a tudor explorer – just some of the events at the Museum of London this week. Free. Find out more here

British Museum: It’s the Year of the Goat. Celebrate Chinese New Year at the British Museum during half term with a whole week of activities. Be creative and make something to take home, help create a giant artwork in the Great Court or listen to stories about China. Free. More details here

National Maritime Museum: Half term craft and storytelling activities at the Maritime Museum and Cutty Sark this month are inspired by tea and the Chinese New Year. More details here

Science Museum: Discover the history of the telephone, meet engineers who create tiny robots and try them out yourself, take an exciting journey through space, make your own 3D glasses to take home, get to grips with mysterious slime mould and more at the Science Museum next week.
