What’s on at the weekend? – 1, 2 April 2017

This weekend marks the start of the school holidays for some, and London is alive with child-friendly activities. Here are a select few:

National Army Museum, Chelsea, now re-opened

Hooray! The National Army Museum is open again after a long period of renovation. It used to be one of our favourite places to visit and we will be sure to check it out asap. On top of the revamped galleries, there is a new play space and you can try out kids’ robotics workshops in the Easter holidays. More details here

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Geometric Playground, Artsdepot, North Finchley, 11am and 2pm, until Thursday 6 April 2017

Artsdepot’s Easter holiday show translates Eric Carle’s famous book onto the stage with the use of 75 puppets. Suitable for children aged 3 and over. Tickets cost £12/£10/£8. The Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race, Spitalfields City Farm, 12pm to 6pm, Sunday 2 April 2017

The Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race has become an April institution. It is exactly as it sounds, two goats in the colours of the boat race teams, racing around the farmyard at Spitalfields City Farm. Enjoy the party atmosphere with food, drink and live music. Tickets available here More details here

Boat Race, Putney to Chiswick Bridge, 12pm to 6pm, Sunday 2 April 2017

If you don’t fancy the goat race, enjoy the real boat race at various vantage points along the Thames from Putney to Chiswick Bridge. Events begin at 12pm at Bishop’s Park, Fulham and the Adnams Fan Park in Furnivall Gardens, Hammersmith. Racing action begins around 4pm. More details here

Sensational Butterflies, Natural History Museum, until 17 September 2017

The Natural History Museum’s butterfly house is back for the Summer. Tickets cost £5.85. More details here

Jeramee, Hartleby and Oooglemore, 2017, until 9 April 2017 and The Velveteen Rabbit, until 15 April 2017, The Unicorn Theatre

If you are looking for children’s theatre this weekend, head to the Unicorn, where a choice of two different shows awaits. For over 3s, try surreal beach comedy Jeramee, Hartleby and Oooglemore, 2017. For the over 5s, try the hit adaptation of the classic American tale The Velveteen Rabbit.
