Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!

MJ and his school friends have been in the grip of a Pokémon obsession for the last year or so. This involves racing around pretending to be the hero Ash or Pikachu his “pocket monster” (Pokémon, get it?) and seeking other Pokémon to “battle”. And just generally spending hours memorising the Pokémon encyclopedia (yes, it exists). In fact, he loves it so much these days that he nearly fainted with excitement when he heard the news that we’d been invited to preview the latest Pokémon movie release.

We rocked up to the stylish, independent Genesis Cinema in the East End and took our seats (brownie points here for Genesis having enormous soft cushions instead of the usual plastic kids booster seats). I know that Pokémon has cult status, but I was still surprised that there were more adults trading Pokémon cards while waiting for the film to start than kids. Clearly, this is bigger than I ever knew. Oh and did I mention that people sang along to the opening theme tune – an unexpected, but nicely enthusiastic start to proceedings.

Anyway, back to the film. Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You has been released to mark the 20th anniversary of the animé. It’s the first film in the Sun and Moon series and tells the story of how Ash first came to choose Pikachu, his cute little yellow pocket monster. They set off in search of the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh and engage in a series of battles and challenges along the way – as well as making new friends.

MJ was totally captivated by the film (to the point that he forgot to hold on to his popcorn) and couldn’t wait to explain all the characters to me later. Not being a Pokémon aficionado myself, I can’t tell you how this film compares to the 19 previous instalments. Nonetheless, it certainly seemed to be a hit with our fellow Poké-fans and it topped the box office when released in Japan.

The film is on special release in the UK and across Europe on 5 and 6 November 2017 at selected cinemas. Cinemagoers will receive special limited edition Pokémon treats (while stocks last) – including a brand new Pokémon Trading Card Game card, QR codes to unlock special features in upcoming Pokémon video games, and a special mini-magazine.
