Messy goes to…Brixton Village (Okido exhibition)

If, like us, you’re big fans of Okido magazine and avid viewers of their recent CBeebies show, head down to Brixton Village over half term. Studio 73 gallery is hosting an exhibition of Okido illustrations by founding artist Rachel Ortas. It’s only a tiny space, but worth a look if you’re in the area. You can buy one of the brightly coloured screen prints, or simply pick up a Messy Monster activity postcard to cut out, glue and hang up at home.

Michael Rosen’s Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake and Bad Things – Discover Children’s Story Centre

Our top recommendation for a day trip in half term, after half term, or in fact any time before next April, is the new Michael Rosen exhibition at Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford. We were feeling very lucky this week to get to attend the launch and hear from the author himself, while filling up on tasty Brick Lane bagels (of which more later)…

Sky Garden, 20 Fenchurch Street (aka the “Walkie-Talkie” Building)

Panoramic views of London come at a price: £25 gets you into the Shard, the London Eye costs upwards of £20. So we were really quite excited this week to be going to visit the recently-opened free public space on the 35th floor of the controversial “Walkie-Talkie” building in the heart of the City…

Planes 2: Fire & Rescue

The winter cold and flu season has hit us with a vengeance, so what better week to receive a copy of Disney’s Planes 2: Fire & Rescue (just released on DVD) to keep us entertained? OK, so we’ve never actually seen the first Planes movie but MJ loves Cars and Cars 2 and the Planes films are basically a spin-off that continues the franchise in a similar vein. Plus, we’ve been exposed to (and by various means have acquired) so much Planes merchandise over the last couple of years that the main character, Dusty Crophopper, was already a household name for us.

Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red – Tower of London

This week we joined the hordes of people visiting the Tower of London to see the flood of ceramic poppies installed to mark the centenary of the First World War. Regardless of whether you approve of the installation or agree with its detractors, it’s hard not to be both impressed and moved by it when you visit in person. The poppies will be removed gradually following Armistice Day. Details here

Ancient lives, new discoveries: British Museum (Parents and Carers View)

We were invited to a special parents and carers view of Ancient lives, new discoveries at the British Museum this week. This new initiative sets aside a two hour slot during which parents and carers can bring children of any age to the Museum’s current exhibition without worrying about disturbing people – plus there’s a free tea or coffee for the adults in the café afterwards. So, how was it for us?

One for the changing bag: Green People Organic Children Sun Lotion SPF25

As we are out and about most days, I always have at least one bottle or tube of high factor sun cream in my bag to slather onto the boys whenever the sun makes an appearance. To date, I’ve generally relied on the big name brands, mostly out of convenience, but I’m always open to new discoveries and so was glad to accept the offer from Green People to review their Organic Children Sun Lotion.
