Themed Day Trips

It’s difficult sometimes to come up with new and exciting things to do in the holiday, so this week babydaytripper has looked to the children themselves for inspiration. If your child has been studying a particular topic at school or nursery this year, why not build a trip around that theme? Here are a few suggestions…

Robot Zoo at the Horniman Museum and Gardens

The BFG

The BFG

It’s been a cinematic week at babydaytripper. When everyone feels under the weather and no-one wants to venture out to be, quite literally, underneath the current weather, then we end up at the cinema or having a DVD afternoon. Fortuitously this week, we had the chance to review Steven Spielberg’s The BFG, which is out now on Digital Download, DVD and Blu-Ray (for those of you doing a spot of early Christmas shopping).

Little Screen cinema club – Vue and Showcase Cinemas (nationwide)

Bad weather and the first winter bugs combined to make us a miserable household last week, so when an invitation to the new Little Screen cinema club popped up in my inbox it seemed the perfect tonic.

Paw Patrol: Pups and the Pirate Treasure – Review by MJ, age 4¾

One of the boys’ favourite pastimes at the moment is pretending to be members of TV’s Paw Patrol, a team of friendly canine heroes that undertakes missions to help out the residents of Adventure Bay. Although the show is a huge hit in our house we very rarely get to see it (we don’t have Sky and the Channel 5 schedule clashes with the school run), so we jumped at the chance this week to review the latest Paw Patrol DVD.

As I’m not really a Paw Patrol expert, our resident TV critic MJ (age 4¾) has kindly agreed to share his thoughts:

Dinosaurs: Monster Families, Horniman Museum & Gardens

The Horniman’s annual temporary exhibitions are always a hit and the boys couldn’t wait for this year’s offering to open last week. We hot-footed it down there to have a look and here’s our review.

Messy goes to…Brixton Village (Okido exhibition)

If, like us, you’re big fans of Okido magazine and avid viewers of their recent CBeebies show, head down to Brixton Village over half term. Studio 73 gallery is hosting an exhibition of Okido illustrations by founding artist Rachel Ortas. It’s only a tiny space, but worth a look if you’re in the area. You can buy one of the brightly coloured screen prints, or simply pick up a Messy Monster activity postcard to cut out, glue and hang up at home.

Broadgate Ice Rink

Looking for an outdoor ice rink that’s still open in January? The options in London are pretty limited, but luckily you can still get your skates on in Broadgate (Liverpool Street) until the end of February. MJ and his dad took to the ice last week to check it out…

Michael Rosen’s Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake and Bad Things – Discover Children’s Story Centre

Our top recommendation for a day trip in half term, after half term, or in fact any time before next April, is the new Michael Rosen exhibition at Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford. We were feeling very lucky this week to get to attend the launch and hear from the author himself, while filling up on tasty Brick Lane bagels (of which more later)…
