Big Fish Little Fish at The Bedford, Balham – Review

We were invited to a Halloween-themed family rave at The Bedford in Balham last Sunday afternoon by the kind people behind Big Fish Little Fish. On parking just around the corner from the venue we knew we were in the right place as a succession of small witches, cats and pumpkins toddled excitedly past.  With our own little day-glo pumpkin impersonator (and his little brother) in tow, we joined the queue to get our entry stamps and complimentary glow sticks.

Inside there were two main areas to explore: a dance floor with DJ playing grown-up club classics and a series of chill out rooms incorporating an arts and craft area. I have to admit that I was always more of an indie kid than a raver and so although we had a couple of stints on the packed main dance floor (complete with confetti cannons, bubbles, balloons and highly-anticipated parachute dance at the end for the kids), we spent more time in the chill out areas where the funky soundtrack was more our thing (or perhaps we’re just getting old).  MJ and G made googly Halloween characters at Captain Cookie’s arts and craft table, MJ helped to colour in the huge Halloween mural and both boys spent ages playing at the play dough table. 16 month old G’s absolute favourite discovery was the chill out room with tents and tunnels to hide in.  There was a proper grown-up bar for the adults as well as a cake stall selling cupcakes, biscuits and cake pops for the kids.

After a couple of hours the boys started to flag, and so we joined the trail of weary revellers heading for home, collecting freebie Happy Monkey smoothies and Bear Alpha Bites cereal on the way out. All in all, we had a fun time and enjoyed our alternative Sunday afternoon, but it would probably be even more fun to go with other families you know and/or to celebrate a special occasion – we noticed a few birthday badges on display on Sunday.

Big Fish Little Fish events run throughout the winter at venues in Hackney, Balham and Brixton. Details of future parties can be found here Tickets cost £8 (adults) and £4.50 (children).
