Bertie and Boo Adventure Island, Balham

This week’s bad weather sent us out on the hunt for new indoor activities to keep everyone entertained.  This week’s review is a perfect rainy day destination – Bertie and Boo Adventure Island soft play centre in Balham.

Bertie and Boo Adventure Island is a play centre and café located close to Balham station (which has step free access from the National Rail platforms to the street – hooray).  At the rear of the café there is a gated soft play area, on a pirate ship/treasure island theme, which is suitable for toddlers and young children.  We plumped for a 50 minute session costing £2.50, but you can also buy an unlimited session for £3.90.  Personally, I thought the timed session was long enough for my 16 month old and his friends to explore the magical island – amongst other things, they jumped into the shark-infested ball pits, raided the treasure chest and walked the plank.

The main café area also has a small soft play zone for babies and younger toddlers, which is free to use and which entertained the toddlers in our group while waiting to go into the larger, gated area.

Besides the soft play, Bertie and Boo Adventure Island has a regular timetable of activities, such as puppet shows and storytelling, throughout the week.  We went along on a Wednesday, which was Balloon Time, and my son and his friends were delighted with the complimentary balloon animals created for them to order by the resident balloon-modeller.

Interest rating

This relatively small, but well-presented, soft play area is a great find for burning off some energy for an hour or so.  The additional timetabled events and activities are also worth a try.

Admission cost

A timed session (e.g. 50 minutes) in the soft play area costs £2.50.  A ticket for unlimited all day play costs £3.90.

Bertie and Boo Adventure Island has a coffee shop serving hot and cold drinks, meals and snacks.  It also offers hot and cold kids’ meals.

Bertie and Boo is accessible to pushchairs.  There are high chairs in the cafe and baby changing facilities are available.
