A World Inside A Book: Gruffalos, Dragons & Other Creatures

The Gruffalo, Stick Man, The Highway Rat, Zog, The Smartest Giant in Town, The Snail and the Whale – just some of the many instantly recognisable characters created by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler over the years. They’ve just arrived at the fantastic Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford, so you can go along and meet them all. We already did just that, and it’s so brilliant that we can’t wait to go back again…

The Smartest Giant in Town

A World Inside a Book: Gruffalos, Dragons & Other Creatures is Discover’s new immersive exhibition, replacing the outgoing Dr Seuss exhibition in the museum’s basement. On arrival, we were directed to a gallery space displaying original illustrations and telling the story behind all the stories. We were then taken through a door into Charlie Cook’s living room (from Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book) – a cosy storytelling space, complete with his familiar armchair and bookcase.

After story time the bookcase slides back to reveal the world inside the books. You are free to explore – and each corner reveals a new delight. Stick Man and his family peep out from the family tree; the Little Old Lady’s house from a Squash and a Squeeze is full of all of her resident animals; the flock from The Snail and the Whale cling to their rock; and tiny townspeople go about their business through the shop windows in the Smartest Giant’s town. Julia Donaldson’s books are so beautifully crafted, and the illustrations so rich in detail, that every room brims over with little references that are great fun for children to spot.

There are loads of little interactive treats too. Dress up as the Gruffalo; play with the Stick family; or stir the witch’s cauldron and then take a seat on her magnificent Broom. You can see Zog flying above you; go into the Highway Rat’s cave; sit in the Smartest Giant’s boat; climb on the grey-blue humback whale; and spot Tiddler and his friends through a submarine window. Anyone who’s read these books to their children will find something to love about this exhibition, whatever age they are. Don’t miss it!

You have to book a 40-minute timed slot for admission to A World Inside a Book: Gruffalos, Dragons & Other Creatures, which costs £1.50 plus the usual £6.50 cost of admission to the rest of Discover (entry costs £2 for 1 year olds, under 1s free). A family ticket costs £22, other discounts are available for Newham residents. Open until September 2018.
