famous venues get booked up or may have long queues but there are lots of other options available, and plenty of options to interest children. Last year babydaytripper had a surprisingly fascinating self-guided tour of the SELCHP power station in South London – operating an enormous grabber to feed London’s waste into the furnace was a particular highlight for the boys. Tottenham Ploughmans RiverFest, Lordship Rec, Saturday 11 September, 11am to 7pm

Tottenham is celebrating its rivers this weekend. Expect a varied line-up of live music, activities, workshops, stalls, locally produced food and craft beer, as well as Tottenham Flower and Festival Show. Free. More details here

Hydrogen Festival, University College London, 12pm to 9.30pm, Saturday 16 September 2017

Inquisitive young minds can discover everything there is to know about hydrogen energy this weekend in UCL’s Main Quad. There will be workshops, games, demonstrations, refreshments and live entertainment. Free. More details here

Totally Thames Festival, until 30 September 2017

Totally Thames continues with lots of exciting river-related events. This weekend choose from the sailing barge parade at Tower Bridge; ThamesFest in Barking and Dagenham; meet the characters of the Cutty Sark; enjoy Comida Fest; contemplate a variety of outdoor art installations; and much more . Samsung Great Court Games, British Museum, 11am to 4pm, Saturday 16 September 2017

The British Museum has a new monthly family event running from September to December. Play digital games, follow discovery trails and crack challenges relating to the Museum’s collection. Participating families have the chance to win a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet. Free. More details here
